The Light of Shodoshima

Light of Shodoshima is located within the rice terraces of Shodoshima, Nagawa, Japan. In the morning, it is accompanied by ethereal mountains and landscape. At night, the light dims down from near to far until finally it turns pitch black. The trees and flowers are vivid at the start and gradually become obscure, while calls of insects and frogs are resounding at times, faint at times.

The work is located in the middle of the terrace fields overlooked by a driveway above and a platform nearby. Visitors may enjoy panorama view of the terraces from the platform, as the sky, the field and the Light of Shodoshima become one. Visitors pass through the meandering path covered by bamboo weaving, moving about in this bamboo-woven space as though they are embarking on a journey of fantasy. Modern landscape design contrasted by century-old theater and rice terraces resonates with the profound local culture, in which natural farming is practiced and the heaven is worshipped. Inside the Light of Shodoshima, light shimmers through the bamboo weaving as sunlight pierces through between the leaves. Visitors may rest and bask in the forest, conversing about the Setouchi Triennale, and enjoying the intertwining light and shadow. They may also stay on the island of Shodoshima overnight and enjoy the views day and night.

This project is a collaboration between residents of Nagayama and Hitoyama in Shodoshima as well as the team from Jiayi, Taiwan. Residents from the two villages bonded as they worked together on cutting and transporting the 5000 bamboos used for the work. At the celebratory party, they sat side by side, toasting with Taiwanese Oolong tea. Everyone's labor, sweat and time spent fused with sunlight, rain and the aroma of bamboo and the natural energy of the universe is absorbed.

Through its bamboo-woven architectural design, the Light of Shodoshima creates a spiritual realm within nature as the optimal platform for human interaction. It echoes the theme of Setouchi Trienniale, where art provides the link to connect to the land, with humans, and to learn with humbleness.
