Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Art is undergoing a transformation starting with the renovation of galleries 104 and 105, situated in the back of the entrance hall. The transformation will allow the museum to better meet the versatile demands for the exhibition of contemporary art. The renovation of galleries 104 and 105 is aimed at optimizing exhibition spaces, elevating the experience of exhibition viewing and creating a contemporary spatial aesthetic.

The demands for exhibiting contemporary art are considerably more complex than a traditional black/white box. The concept of our design is the “Light Room” with the intention to create a space that can utilize light flexibly and freely. The renovation consists of the construction of new walls and ceilings to re-define the exhibition space, reorganize the circulation, and maximize the use of double height and multilayered spaces. The addition of a new light ceiling allows a rich dialogue of viewers and artworks, creating a fluid spatial experience.

The thick walls and luminous ceiling define the entire exhibition space. From gallery 104, a ‘light ladder’ leads viewers to the gallery on the 2nd floor. A horizontal opening allows for the extension of different views from different perspectives. The white ceiling mesh screen and luminous membrane combined to create a layering of solid and void. Varies lighting fixtures and functional equipment are integrated into the ceiling design. Gray seamless flooring emphasizes the continuity of the 2 galleries. Passing through a pivot point from gallery 104, newly designed walls define the enclosure of gallery 105. A long corridor leads to the 2nd floor providing daylight and a breathing space for the enclosed interior. The white ceiling design is extended from gallery104 enhancing the connection of the 2 galleries.

Lighting is not merely a functional requirement in a museum. It is the key feature in creating spatial ambience and the proper exhibition of artwork. In our renovation design, exhibition areas with intermittent natural light and artificial illumination are clearly defined. The main exhibition areas are thus presented as the ‘Light Rooms’, allowing museum viewers a rich spatial and visual experience. And the new ceiling design integrates seamlessly the lighting system, satisfying the complex needs of a contemporary museum.
