第一眼的AMA我們會聯想到什麼呢?AMA這個詞在台灣為稱呼自己阿嬤的直接音譯,也是我們命名博物館的名稱。所以故事的一開始我們從阿嬤家開始,探討台灣舊時慰安婦的議題。阿嬤家是每個人心中充滿許多回憶的地方,迪化街的阿嬤家裡,我們有著一群可愛的阿嬤,向大家述說著自己年輕時的回憶。

阿嬤家位於迪化街一段256號,是一棟傳統洋樓式兩進街屋,天井和後院保有唭哩岸石的牆面,和平鴿牆為「婦女救援基金會」在找尋阿嬤家的過程時,希望讓沉重的慰安婦的議題透過和平的方式再詮釋。

入口第一進為咖啡店,重新組成宛女阿嬤的畫作和描繪阿嬤細膩的筆觸,牆面上畫作的圖案會透過人的觸摸印出人的痕跡,牆面裡是阿嬤們療癒過程的創作,打開的過程是和作品的對話也是在探索老房子舊有的紋理。

第一進連接第二進的長廊空間為象徵穿越時光倒過去的「她們的時光」,從二進一樓開始爬上樓梯到二進二樓皆為主要的慰安婦議題的展覽空間,扶手是象徵牽著阿嬤的手一起看阿嬤們的故事,也是重新定意一個看展的方式。

二樓的過水則是「蘆葦之歌」,透過上千根透明管以及五十九盞投射阿嬤姓名的紅銅管,使紅銅管內的姓名投射在手上,彷彿用雙手捧著阿嬤,小心的呵護。

最後到達女力平權學習區,為一個多用途空間,我們增設移動傢俱和老房子的結構緊緊相連,讓空間有了新的面貌,代表阿嬤的心意,未來將陪伴著大家度過更多快樂的時光。

書法家董陽孜老師為阿嬤家提筆的「阿嬤」,也為這棟老房子開啟了新的故事和名字,紅銹鋼板隨著時間的變化漸漸變成紅繡的板才,緩慢的融入街景中,在夜間綻放的光影照亮了迪化街頭。

Memories of military prostitute's forbidden history is evoked and felt in AMA Museum (‘Ama’ is a Taiwanese colloquialism for ‘grandmother’ and used as the project name), designed by Whole A+P. A number of brave old ladies (the comfort women) would like to tell the poignant stories in their early ages with people through the spaces. Whole A+P believes that Individuals would also like to share the aura of sadness of Amas’ lives with peace and love.

AMA Museum, located at No.256 Dihua St., is situated in a traditional row house. Our client, The Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation selected this house because of its well preserved condition, with the original Qilian stone wall adorned with peace doves. Furthermore, the symbol of peace doves allows Whole A+P to re-illuminate the solemn issue of the comfort women in a conciliatory way.

The first section of the row house is a coffee shop, surrounded by five drawings of Wan-nu Ama. Whole A+P reorganized those touching drawings with corten steel expresseing Ama’s warm heart and recording the visitors’ imprints of their warm palms.

The linkage corridor on the first floor holds an exhibition titled “Their Time”. The handrail, started here, is the core concept of AMA Museum. Apart from the barrier-free function, handrail in this project would like to convey the idea that visitors could walk through the whole exhibition while holding AMAs’ hands. Handrail continues throughout the whole museum, symbolizing that those amiable and valorous old ladies (the comfort women) will own a rosy future in their later life.

The linkage corridor on the second floor holds the "Song of the Reed" exhibition. The changing inner moods of the Amas’ from melancholy to tranquil and from loathe to forgiveness are expressed through thousands of transparent tubes and 59 corten steel tubes. Those crimson metal tubes are lights which could project Amas’ names on visitors’ hands.

The second floor is a multiple functional area. The Foundation will hold lectures for physically-mentally-damaged women and provide a book-sharing place for locals. All furniture designed are flexible and movable is in order to preserve the original building.

The weaving of reeds in this historic district of Taipei is the first impression Whole A+P wants to present. The hand-written Chinese characters of ‘Ama’ appear on the elevation as calligraphy and mounted on corten steel board. The selection of corten steel reflects the historical meaning and temporal changes in this area.
