Leaning against the mountain to the west, this project is settled within a small community next to the Boashan Reservoir, Hsinchu County. The linear site extends to the north along the community alley, accompanied by a 5-meter-deep, sunken old river course on its eastern side.

The clients, Mr. and Ms. Chen are hoping to grow their own plants and fruits on this fertile low-lying land where they could find inner peace after their retirement.

Fluidity

The sequential residential spaces extend one after another towards the north along the linear site, following the meandering topography in between the mountains and river course; then, the rhythms of irregular volumes comes into existence. With the openness of the valley, river course and natural landscape on the eastern side, the organic form seems to resonate with the dynamic movement of the historical river course; on the western side, in order to create lanes and alleys crisscrossing a dwelling cluster, the volumes are being scaled down to human senses, while their orientations are adjusted with following the curve of the road. As a result, the interior arrangement and circulation provide a changing and dynamic building process between the manmade and the natural.

Contextual Tectonic

Facing the east where the community entrance lies, the roof and façade systems attempt to use serpentine- close lightly pebbles, solid wood and the bamboo forest to extend the fluidity. In order to correspond to and merge into the dynamic green of the back forest, the windows are flexibly arranged in the proper locations which not only blurring the boundary between the interior and exterior but also preserving the wide vision and privacy. As for the uneven volumes on the western side, the designer uses red bricks to avoid the western exposure, respond to the human scale, and keep the cluster warm and simple.

The hanging solid wood panels can not only respond to the natural appearance, but regulate the temperature difference from the morning sunrise as well. What’s more, they provide more warmth out of nature.

Slow Living

It is hopeful that the attempt to insert a dwelling within the context of the sky, earth, humans, mountains and water can turn a house into a home.
