Mixed Usage/Dualism

The alleys of Taipei are filled with chaos yet it is precisely this mess which is full of allure and radiates a form of vernacular energy. Mixed usage plays a crucial role in this picture, contrary to stylistic sculptural forms, the dissonance of the program sequence strikes a more astounding chord. Residential areas, traditional buildings, two and two quarters bar, a temple embedded in an office building, the mixed usage of arcade space……Though the disarray of these spaces creates positive energy, these bold concoctions are also accompanied by danger and sloppiness.

The dual existence and interrelationship of A and B programs have always been a core design philosophy. How do we extract the essence of A and B, such that they retain their thematic identity, yet simultaneously encourage the exchange or sharing of two spaces? It could be the transfer of visual and audio senses! Though it might seem that all programs can be mixed and matched, but exchanged without discipline and limits will only create disorganization and waste positive energy.

Aesthetic Theory

Through the unspoken rules of mixed usage, the countryside of Taiwan is uniformly sloppy and disorganized, yet it is through this organic urban sprawl which gives birth to the possibility of an aesthetic theory. Many architects and artists have attempted to illustrate the vernacular Taiwanese aesthetic image; store signs, pigeon cages, power lines, and neon lights……Through the kaleidoscope of vitality, any such chaotic scenery can be elevated to a higher level of interpretation. Through the use of light structures and wire mesh, a multi-layered membrane of “rational tectonics” can be embedded unto “the irrationality of the outer skin”; this aesthetic theory is an attempt to unify both conflicted and harmonious imagery.

The Renaissance of Rooftop Platforms

The skyline of Taiwan’s cities have always been a nightmare. The most poetic city of the skies has been overrun due to lack of government regulations. Regarding the deterioration of waterproofing and the unbearable temperatures of rooftop platforms, storage functionality and green houses have slowly evolved into illegal rooftop additions which has raised concerns regarding building aesthetics and even dangerous construction methods.

Furthermore, if the social aspect of rooftop platforms can be given more notice, more diversity will be allowed for the public’s benefit. Thus we propose to create a rooftop organic garden, and through utilizing rooftop extrusions, we are able to transform this space into playgrounds for viewing and rest. The oversaturation of disorganized skylines of Taiwan’s countryside can be overcome through this proposal!

A spatial revolution through mixing artistic tectonics and everyday architecture!

“……a column split in two, T-shaped joint extends unto structure, the formation of light structure, the separated column allows for electrical and plumbing wiring to pass through, forming a main structure body and a secondary structural system (such as electrical, air conditioning, internet cable……) embedded inside this spatial framework. The derivative joint detail, the wall claws need to be designed with the whole framework in mind. The rhythmic modular floor slabs uses custom metal deck units, and lightweight concrete is poured upon……”
