The Hong-Gen mansion was engulfed by fire with only the front façade and side walls of red bricks remaining. The main structure was built by the family’s grandparents with a history of 70 years. Given its historical value and the emotional attachment between present owner and the house, the architect decides to preserve the existing façade and walls.
The design is composed of three curves. Two curves define the contours of the sloping roof. The roof’s angle changes along the curve. The third curve is a load-bearing wall with curvatures in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions. It divides each floor into two zones: the larger zone is the main space with the stair occupying the smaller zone. The stair is topped with a sunroof introducing natural light into the interior.
The design emphasizes the arrangement of the functional spaces with the architect’s special attention given to the integration of structural system and materials. The architectural concrete of the curved wall is a dynamic element and transforms the tradition into the new.
