A Whale Story

A Whale Story

This is our first built public competition project. The school is in the countryside of Southern Taiwan, along the coast of the Taiwan Strait. The uneven and faceted landscape design is a dialogue with the ridge of the Central Mountain Range to the East. The angled hardscape encourages children to interact with it, as a hill, a staircase, and as a playground, which extends into a courtyard that serves as a windbreak against wind from the northeastern. It also frames the view towards the ocean for the classrooms and the public plaza, which metaphorically turns into a “Whale” imagery.

Underneath the ocean-color ceiling, there are vertical concrete walls in the hallway to obstruct monsoon and harsh western sunlight. The punctures on the walls resemble the bubbles in the ocean and help set up a hide-and-seek playground for the children in the shade. The openings are designed with the intent to let the local townscape to shine through. They allow the children to regain views on the rooflines of nearby villages and temples, as well as the vivid scenery when the downhill wind soars through the mountains.

The outdoor circulation creates a poetic experience of sightseeing along the pathway. When one’s eyesight and movements rise above the levee and reach over to the rooftop, which also serves as an emergency high ground during tsunamis, one can start hearing the rhythm created from the tidal waves, sensing the breeze from the seasonal wind, feeling the sunlight from the South of the country, and ultimately, embracing the vision and imagination of the seaside campus.
