This project is more than designing a pier facility. More importantly, it’s an attempt to reorganize pedestrian and car traffic for the inter-island transit. It helps redefine environmental and spatial relationships in the area. This pier is a transit hub in the archipelago to ensure better traffic flow. It is also an access point to the aquatic life of the ocean for residents and travelers alike.
With a horizontal arc rooftop, we reopen the coastal view and reshaped its spatial rhythm at Fuao pier. The rooftop is elevated on the mountain side, and lowered on the ocean side. It is a connection point between mountain and ocean. The tilted rooftop corresponds to the topography on the island. It fits well into the natural landscape of Matsu. The conversation between modern architectural languages and traditional architectural styles forms a new landscape.
Large fair-faced concrete blocks create an open flow in the surrounding. It offers a comfortable boarding space, with full services and functions for inter-island transit. It is also a leisure space for residents by bringing back beautiful mountain and ocean views.
The beamless arc structure is extended in the front and back on the second floor. The observatory, formed by lower walls, provides another perspective with a different height. The use of unassuming gray bricks shifts our focus back to nature. From the observatory, it resembles a mild horizon to offer comfort and serenity. Users can feel mountains, oceans, wind, and sunshine, and form a new and intimate relationship with Matsu.
