This was the first rebuilding project in 106 years for the main store of "Kyoto Kyukyodo", a long-established company of incense, writing brushes, ink sticks, and Japanese stationery, founded in 1663. Naohisa Kumagai, the 12th generation head of the company, asked us to create a new atmosphere on Teramachi-dori through the creation of the store. It took five years to rebuild the store and office across the street in turn, relocating the sales floor so as not to stop business, and completing the two store buildings facing each other.

The first store, located on the west side of Teramachi Street, was enclosed by thick stone walls, and the sales floor, courtyard, and separate incense room were placed inside. The street side is entirely covered with open glass so that the brightly lit courtyard behind the sales floor can be seen from the street. The roof over the sales floor is topped with a top-light to create a space with shades of light and shade.

On the other hand, the second store on the opposite side of the street has a reversed configuration, with a stone core inside a glass enclosure: a sales floor and coffee shop space on the first floor, and a standing incense listening space on the second floor, both covered by a large roof. Sound absorption is achieved between the wooden louvers in the walls and ceiling to create an open yet cozy space.

Although the two buildings have different compositions, they have the same expression to Teramachi- Street. A large tiled roof with a soft, mukuri pattern and detailed small eaves welcomes guests. At night, the street side is closed with a single gable door to create a new night scene.

Both buildings were originally built to block the arcade, but by making them one-story and lowering the eaves on the street side, light was let into the street, creating a much brighter atmosphere. The two buildings facing each other on the other side of the street gently responded to each other, and a new wind began to blow on Teramachi- Street.
