Familienhaus Hüningerstrasse

Atelier 5

The residential building planned for large families closes the gap in an existing perimeter block development at the intersection of Lothringerstrasse and Hüningerstrasse in the St. Johann district of Basel. It was the client's intention to make a contribution with this project against the displacement of families from the neighbourhood.

Separate private outdoor spaces were deliberately omitted in favour of a communal development with individual lounge areas on arcades. Only one staircase - accessible via the courtyard - provides access to all 17 flats and three control rooms on the upper floors. All of the flats are open-plan and thus participate in the quiet inner courtyard and at the same time in the life of the urban space. Maisonette flats occupy the two volumetrically stepped upper floors.

At the entrance to the residential building, a communal room completes the offer for the residents. The inner courtyard, which is part of the property, is a diversely designed outdoor space that also invites the neighbours to linger. On the ground floor and in parts of the basement there is a public neighbourhood, children's and youth library.
