Meanwhile, pedestrians, runners, strollers, students, and wheelchairs were all squeezed into the traffic lanes. Not to mention the concerts and slides that will happen after the transformation seemed out of reach under this condition.

This cycle of congestion and tension perpetuated unhealthy dynamics. Isn’t walking comfortably or having the space to run and dance a basic human right? Shouldn’t the fish and shrimp in the canal gain sufficient oxygen to live?

Removing the stainless-steel railings that parallelled the waterway and replaced them with low vegetation, we thus marked the boundaries between land and water. Thanks to the foresight of the city government, upstream water quality purification was already enforced before the population of he North Hsinchu community reached high density.

Reconnecting alleys of the left and right banks that were blocked by shrubs to create shortcuts, the visual perspectives derived from history intersected with a century-old waterscape. This naturally revealed the depth of vision and infused sunlight, air, and vitality into the inner core of Longen Canal, releasing an already existing but underutilized urban open space.

The gently undulating terrain could protrude slightly with edges no thicker than 10 centimeters, adapting to the roots and contours of the trees to guide pedestrians through the area like the movement of winds.

The layout was hand-marked on-site, with soil mounds and elevated platforms separating human pathways from ecological spaces to ensure mutual harmony.

On these gently elevated and spacious paths, shaded by trees, sections where grass cannot grow are paved with flat and soft artificial mats. This creates barrier-free zones and playing areas for children, and people almost never mind their steps. In sunken corners, people can casually take a seat seating, making the spaces more intimate with everyday life.

The green belts between two traffic lanes preserve the walking paths adjacent to stores. Playful and imaginative furniture and lighting resemble natural environments, fostering a sense of spatial transformation by making people feel smaller while the spaces seem bigger. At night, the lighting glows like creatures in a forest, creating an enchanting and welcoming atmosphere that boosts local businesses.

Through relentless conversation with the resident, we reduced the amounts of trees and shrubs. They no longer clustered together, allowing each of them to display its unique form.

The ancient canal’s winding curves became more pronounced against the backdrop of broad and straight lines, heralding a new era for pedestrian pathways.

By allowing the canal to diagonally intersect three-dimensional spaces with varying elevations from east to west, it naturally draws attention to its ecological richness and the clarity of the water. This design brings everything to different elevations and visual perspectives, renewing our friendship with the canal to create a dynamic emptiness where blissful possibilities will unfold in any form.
