House no.46 is located on an old alley of a high-density city, surrounded by all kinds of the buildings that have different functions and usages, such as cram school, hotel, temple, restaurant, retailer, residence, and so on.
Compare to the nearby downtown area, the old alley view is more interesting. It shows the effects of time. Coexistence between high-density city life and slow paced life is the topic of this project.
The idea of the design is to create a cuboid as the main volume. It is then covered with several elements, like big balconies, high walls, and deep headers that make this project a semi-enclosed, compact house. Views from inside would be partly blocked by those elements, while a new view was created by an inner courtyard. Those elements not only partly block views, but also provide privacy. Through the arrangement of openings, the cityscape is divided into pieces. Cloud, skyline, treetop, vegetation on the lower balcony or the backyard all become background elements to the interior spaces.
The palette of materials used on the building is aesthetically a contrast of textures. The rough surface/ warm color tone of the granite tiles contrasts with the smooth and fine concrete surface on exterior of building. The Main interior finish is teak. The warmth of this natural material creates a balance to the architectural concrete of the inner courtyards. It will produce a unique texture with age.
We can summaries our design ideas and approach for the house as the coexistence between high-density city life and slow paced life.
