House in HONEN-IN

Traditional row house in Kyoto, which is about 90 years old, renovated into private dwelling. For this intervention, we tried to visualize thousands years of “History” of Japanese wooden architecture which is usually hidden in the surface. For example, the mud wall fixed on the bamboo-lattice has many layers from construction process, but we only can see the finishing layer. We dare to exposed bamboo base without finishing, to visualize very primitive Japanese construction technique, as 1 layer of “History” of this house. In the same way, every detail of this house was designed for showing the process of assemble, to make people in this space enjoy the rich “Time” experience.

Ongoing “Time” ~ especially the nature of the surroundings ~ should be observed from the window, where we carefully designed as a place to relax. Red colored curtain was installed most recently, to welcome the guest and celebrate this intervention.
