The Taipei Tennis Center was one of the main venues of the Taipei 2017 Universiade (World University Games). There are 12 outdoor courts, including a Center court and a smaller main court and 4 indoor courts. A service building provides spaces for VIPs and FISU representatives, press conference rooms, media workspace and restaurants. The total floor area is 50960.47㎡ (including parking and air-raid refugee areas). In addition to FISU (International University Sports Federation) standards, the venue also conforms to specifications for the ATP World Tour 250 Series for men, WAT International for women and the Davis Cup. The complex was completed with a soft opening at the end of May 2017. After the games, management of the venue was contracted to a private entity by the municipality under the "operate and transfer" agreement. It currently serves as a sports center used mainly for tennis training and games.
Site Planning
Underground parking was carefully located so as to minimize excavation by taking advantage of the site's original topography, which has a north to south slope of around 10 meters. As a result, a natural relationship between the audience seating and the outdoor courts was also created. With a view to minimize the scale of the complex and its environmental impact, most of the service facilities were concealed within the recessed infrastructure, with only the courts and ancillary facilities located at grade. Spacious greenbelts were placed on the east and south sides of the complex, where abundant trees and layered planting provided a green barrier that served as a buffer with the adjacent residential neighborhoods.
Planning and Design Features
The functional and structural aesthetics’ of Sports Facility
Sports is the ultimate manifestation of the function and the art of the human body embodying power and beauty. Like a good functioning body, good architecture coordinates complex structures to serve smoothly various functional systems. The architecture of the tennis center must accommodate the smooth operations of the games and the efficient flow of people, vehicles, objects, information, etc. The center comprises of four service core of elevators, equipment and service shafts. They are connected with steel trusses at the top to form a mega-structure. The indoor courts and the roofs of the center court are suspended from this structure to create a free-flowing, column free arena. The "weightlessness" of the lower spaces and the "power" of the top structures create a balance and contrast.
