Brainhacking Architecture? – Seeking for access to unconscious realm

The project is located on Penghu Island – a small Island in the southwest Taiwan, where the blazing sunlight and splendid landscape await and astonish the visitors. The two main element of the building – i.e., the wavelike slabs and the zigzag void vertically cutting through it – are both based on the form of EEGs (brain waves) actually recorded from the client and the architect at the project site using a handy BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) tool.

“Applying EEG to architecture design” may sound quite bizarre, even like a mere flippant eye-catcher – but it is actually one of the outcomes of our serious effort to go beyond our limited consciousness to open a new realm of architecture design. In this case, we have succeeded to give life to a truly unique form/space, which could have never emerged otherwise, by simply applying the EEG waveforms – one of the phenomena that represent the fundamental yet unconscious “rhythm” beneath our shallow consciousness. Our ambition is to realize an architecture which is more a life/organism itself than a fashionable architecture merely looking “like” a living organism.

The ENISHI Project was designed and conceptually designed by Japanese architects Maeda and Mr. Tsuji, and then developed by Taiwan architectural team, Mr.Sha, Weng Tingyi Architect and Chen Kuanfan’s structural technicians. The case was completely implemented and constructed. The dialogue between architecture and structure began from the beginning of design, and the integrated design of thought, transformation, implementation, and evolution continued to occur. After six years of construction, each link was completed. Intertwined, each participating person is actually a part of the team, and this rare and huge integration has completed this rare international cooperation case. We dedicate this building to the owner who always pays and believes in us - Ms. Liu Shufen.
