“The Great Shine” is located on an urban block behind The Ambassador Hotel along Zhongshan North Road in Taipei. It borders traditional alley in seven meters width and faces south onto Zhong-an Park. The neighborhood consists mainly of two to five story residential buildings with mixed use commercial developments from the 1960s-1970s, evoking memories of an ‘old’ Taipei.
In response to such a friendly urban fabric, we first imagine a new building that is akin to creating a path home, a path that extends from the narrow lanes of the surrounding neighborhood. This path would resemble an alley floating above the city. As we step out of the elevator of our new building, we are confronted with the view of the park below and the activity space of neighbors. Hence in the overall planning, we created a double entrance to link Lane 65 and Zhong-an Park as well as vertically connect the pathway home visually and spatially. Skylight opens up at the top of the building providing natural lighting and ventilation for the interior spaces, forming a porous-like spatial environment. A 660cm dimension is used as the basic module for the entire design. From floor planning to the division of the façade, this module is used as a unifying element.
“The Great Shine” intends to challenge the simplistic spatial logic and planning of public spaces in current property market. By proposing a concept of a ‘pathway home’ as a mediator between the building and the urban environment, the public corridors are once again integrated into part of the city!
