As somewhat later in the Villa Mairea, Aalto did not attempt to unite the two floors of the residential part in their house through a two—storey void, which would have been the usual modernist move.On the contrary, the two floors of the residential part are connected in the most minimal manner only through the upper half of the staircase. Neither do the two floor plans reflect each other in any way. Instead of spatial and structural clarity, which was the ideal of the Modern Movement, Aalto prefers a sense of intimacy, protection and secrecy.
