Cooler Master
Geometric and Organic / Artificial and Natural / Technology and Craft
Cooler Master Co., Ltd. is a globally-oriented Taiwanese technology company that provides computer cooling solutions. Its new Taipei headquarter, The Cooler Master Building, is located centrally in the rezoned Jiuzong Section of Taipei's Neihu District, on a site in the shape of an equilateral triangle with sides of about 90 meters. Our aim was a headquarters building that would reflect a harmonious integration of contemporary technology and the natural environment, one that could form a natural ecosystem and become a green island in the midst of its urban surroundings.
The appeal of the architectural design derives from its juxtaposition of geometrical and natural forms, in which plantings and areas of greenery complement its architectural weight and volume at multiple levels. Design relationships were based primarily on considerations of balancing nature and human activity. Outside, on two sides of the recessed ground floor, double rows of trees in staggered plantings line walkways to form an open urban space. The open, sunken square on the northeast side features landscape plantings on multiple levels, adding light and greenery to the dining and rest areas of the first underground level and creating another tranquil green urban corner.
The building's main body consists of five staggered rectangular volumes. The ground floor and the fifth floor are recessed to form an entrance hall and an activity court. The main activities spaces include a green terrace, extending from the interior to the exterior, and activity platforms on different levels. The use of high-transmission glass creates lightness and grace while enhancing the cantilever effect.
The building's volume and its vertical service spaces together form a virtual triangular body, which is the central area of the headquarters building. This area features natural ventilation, lighting and intelligent control of the light environment, while providing at the same time the living and learning spaces of the office.
The office space is organized over a large span of floor area, with modular units that can be flexibly divided to serve different functions at different times.
The vertical sunshade system on the exterior is integrated with the glass curtain wall; the sunshades are oriented at two different angles in consideration of the angle of the sunlight and the building's positioning. The silver-grey perforated mesh subtly reflects the changing light of the surrounding environment, allowing the appearance of the overall structure to change in harmony with its surroundings.
The architectural aesthetics of this structure arose naturally as a response to the desire for a dialogue with the natural environment and a setting for human activities.
The principal part of the headquarters building is located in the fifth floor's triangular square, or central court. This is a living and learning area, focused on people, as well as a platform for exhibitions and communication with the public. The narrow gaps in the court's spaces equip it with a natural mechanism for ventilation, while three oval skylights of different sizes create a flow of natural light from above into the spaces below, allowing people can sense whether the sky is cloudy or sunny. Beginning from the main level of the fifth floor, three staggered staircases form a spiral path that leads upward to link the usable spaces of each level, forming substantial connections between the activities taking place within the headquarters. This aspect of allowing closer meetings and interactions between people gives natural shape to the core values of this headquarters building.
