How to use the lightest action to build a greenhouse in a dense forest full of vitality?

The visitor center is a transition between the interior and exterior of the Garden Exposition. Within the Exposition ground there are various pavilions and large gardens. The pavilions isolate nature from the outside. The large garden lacks shade, unable to provide a comfortable environment for people to get in touch with nature. Both the pavilions and gardens become barriers between nature and humanity. We envision the visitor center as an intermediary space inside and outside of the park. Given the large influx of tourists from the cities to the natural park ground, the visitor center should act as a filtration tank. It should soothe the body and mind of the visitors, allowing them to slow down and get close to the surrounding trees.

We started by drawing a perfect circle with a diameter of 84 meters. Dividing the circle into 60 equal parts, the circular outline connects most of the trees and retains most of the green space within our site. Walls were removed exposing the beam-column system allowing the preserved trees to grow through the beams and columns. A light structural design resembling an outdoor pavilion connects the indoor spaces with the outdoor. PC boards are used as roofing material commonly used in greenhouses allowing visual extension from the interior to the greenery of the woods. The structural system consists of 12.5cm square white galvanized pipes. An attempt is made to visually integrate the trees in the forest with a dense structural column system.

The average height of the surrounding trees is 12 meters. We defined a large square exterior grass lawn in the center of the circular site. The roof height surrounding the lawn is 2.8 meters with an emphasis of human scale. The roof gradually rises radially outward to a height of 9 meters, forming a circular arc which connects the lawn with the surrounding trees. The roof implicitly defines the inside and outside of the lawn. On the outside, it is curved with a reverse gradient arc. Wrapped from the entrance plaza to the rear it allows nature to become a feature of the space connecting people and nature. Our building becomes a backdrop between people and nature.
