13/4 FARM HOUSE

The client is a young couple who specialize in furniture making. They plan to return to their hometown and build a home with their parents who are farmers. The site is located on a farm land in a suburb of Taichung city. According to the building code, the building coverage ratio of this site is half of the regular ratio for farmhouses. The site is surrounded by typical rural factories. It is a blend of both agricultural and industrial landscape.

Building a creative house for three generations with the limited site area and chaotic environmental conditions is the most significant challenge. As a result, we developed the following strategies in response to the challenge.

The gridded plan in the gridded farmland

We proposed a strategy of forming a plan with a 2x2 m grid. Combining four houses with different hierarchies, this creates a three floor building with 13 floor plates in different heights. The voids between different floor plates trigger dynamic spatial relationships. This allows a tight but also uninterrupted spatial condition between the three generations.

The openings framing views from up and down

The openings leading upward allow people to look up to the sky and secure the privacy of the house. The openings leading downward extend horizontally to the farmland, blocking the afternoon sunlight from the west. The other openings framing views filter the chaotic environmental elements. The opening next to the road also serves as a showcase of the furniture designed by the clients.

The swaying staircase under the skylight

The sun light during different times of the day cascades through the staircase in the atrium. The light connects different living spaces and also led our eyesight to multiple views as we move through the house.

We expect to create a simple but rich daily life with the dynamic living spaces in this project.
