New Construction of Yangmei Rest Station on National Highway No. 1

Betty Chou Architect & Associates

The Yangmei Rest Station is located on the former site of the Yangmei Toll Station along National Highway No. 1. It is located on the southern end of the overpass between the cities of Wugu and Yangmei. The concepts of Yangmei Rest Station consist of four Chinese ideograms, (原), (源), (圓), and (園), which have the same pronunciation, ‘Yuan’ but very different meanings.

The first concept ‘Yuan’(原) refers to origins, or the original physical needs of humans to release ourselves. In this case it is taken to mean that the rest station provides services for the original needs of travellers. We designed a huge roof as shelter from the wind and rain. The round opening on the roof exposes the scenery and rain from the sky. It is transformed into a curved funnel surface to reduce the height of the eaves while reducing the inconvenience caused by the oblique wind and rain. The gap between the roof and the wall allows the passage of airflow and removes humidity and odor. The second concept ‘Yuan’(源) refers to the continuous circulation of elements such as earth, light, water, and wind in the rest station. The third concept ‘Yuan’(圓) refers to a circle and represents the basic geometry of the Yangmei Rest Station. The circular centripetal space ensures that the corridor has not dead end and improves safety. The fourth concept ‘Yuan’(園) means a courtyard garden. We hope to change public perception of typical public toilet facilities with views of courtyard garden and sunlight passing through the roof. Even though it's just a short stay in rest area, we still hope to create a good experience for every traveller.

There are four circles on the ground floor. The women's toilet, the universal building, and the men's toilet are located in three ‘imaginary’ circles. The main store, the equipment space and a water tower on the upper floor are located in the ‘tangible’ circle is. We designed multiple parental care toilets for parental use. The universal building integrates nursing rooms, barrier-free, gender-friendly and parental care toilets, providing comprehensive facilities for all users. During the design period, our design concept for the station was fully supported by Freeway Bureau, MOTC. And we were encouraged to transform our design concept into a distinct signage system.

Parking is available for 54 cars and 10 tourist coach. The flooring of the parking lot and sidewalks are designed as permeable paving increasing water retention. In response to topographic relief, we designed vertical greenery systems on both sides of the tourist coach driving lanes.
