Dharma Drum Mountain "YLBY" is located in The Qiyan Ecological Community of Beitou within Taipei City. It is a spiritual place that provides meditation activities and respect for our environment. The architectural planning follows the teaching of the founding Master Sheng Yen and is respectful of the integration of architecture within the community.

The facility has 7 floors above ground and 4 floors underground. The first floor is for reception and classroom, the second floor is for administrative offices, the third floor is the hall for meditation, and the fourth to seventh floors are accommodation spaces. The site is adjacent to three roads. In order to create a friendly public space, the building is set back at the corners of the east and west sides to form a street corner square. We considered the design of a more people friendly religious architecture achieving the contemporary teaching of conveying the Dharma. We are against the solemn and inaccessible religious buildings typical of the past.

The walls of the outer corridor space on the first floor are constructed with semi-penetrating natural terracotta bricks. It creates a friendly atmosphere, buffers the inner and outer spaces, and creates a natural ventilated and light-transmitting intermediary space used by believers to visit, negotiate, and rest. This intermediary space is also between the facility entrances on the east and west sides reducing disturbances to the internal classroom corridors on the first floor.

Master Sheng Yen believed that the true energy of the built environmental is not determined by green building standards. It starts with daily life, including "easy maintenance and easy cleaning", which is also a manifestation of environmental protection. Dust resistant material and water drainage / dripping details must be considered. Master Sheng Yen also believes in "reducing the use of elevators and encouraging the use of stairs", another manifestation of environmental protection. Stairs with natural ventilation and daylight are placed on the east and west sides of the facility to encourage walking opportunities and reduce heat absorption.

The design method of the architectural form utilizes a "continuous solid and void massing" concept to naturally construct the image of the Chinese word "mountain"(山). It also attempts to minimize the oppression that the building volume might have with continuous walls. As for the building materials, the idea is to remove unnecessary decorations. The exterior building surface of architectural concrete finish forms a natural texture. The concrete is finished in rough and natural rustic textures to achieve a restrained architectural style.

Since the project is in an ecological community, it is necessary to think about how to reduce pollution and improve environmental protection during the construction process. The whole building adopts precast concrete construction method. Beams, columns and walls are pre-constructed in the factories shortening the construction period and reducing the dust and noise in the construction site. The construction method also greatly reduces construction waste, minimizes CO², in order to achieve the goal of building a ecological community.
