Yi-Chih Huang

Since the 1980s, efforts in modernization and localization in Taiwanese architecture have primarily focused on consolidating community consciousness through practical building activities, as well as redefining and reconstructing regional culture. This article attempts to elucidate the exploration direction of Taiwanese architecture's subjectivity and autonomy through the theoretical framework of Constructive Regionalism. Constructive Regionalism emphasizes breaking away from external knowledge frameworks, concentrating on intuitive experiences derived directly from life. It underscores the importance of these direct experiences and contemplates how regional traditions and history can engage in positive and forward-looking dialogues with contemporary society. Rejecting individualism, Constructive Regionalism values collective labor and participation, advocating for mutual fulfillment to construct buildings with a regional cultural vitality.
